How to remove Read AI, Otter and Fireflies from your meetings

Last updated

AI note takers like Read AI, Otter and Fireflies join meetings as a participant, often automatically from someone’s calendar. Here’s how to remove each one from a live call, stop it joining again, and block bots in meetings you host — using the steps each vendor documents.

The quick answer

How to stop each note taker
Note takerStop it auto-joiningRemove it from a live callChat command
Read AIAccount Settings › Meeting Recording › Auto-Join PreferencesHost: People panel › three-dot menu › Removeread stop or opt out
OtterMeetings › AI Notetaker settings › Meetings I manually selectStop Notetaker in the conversationstop otter

Remove Read AI

Stop Read AI from joining your meetings

  1. In Read, open Account Settings › Meeting Recording › Auto-Join Preferences.
  2. Under Which Calendar Events and Who’s Invited, narrow when Read joins — for example only meetings you host, or only internal ones.
  3. To skip a single meeting, open Read’s Calendar page and switch off Add Read? for that event. For a recurring meeting you can choose this instance or all future ones.

Remove Read AI from a meeting that’s already running

  • Google Meet: the host or a co-host opens People, clicks the three-dot menu next to Read and chooses Remove from the call.
  • Microsoft Teams: open People, then the three-dot menu next to Read, then Remove from meeting.
  • Any participant, any platform: type read stop in the chat (Read leaves, a report is still made) or opt out (Read leaves and deletes what it recorded).
  • Before it’s let in: deny its request to join. In Google Meet, use Deny entry.

Remove Read AI from Zoom

  1. Sign in to the Zoom App Marketplace and open Manage › Installed Apps.
  2. Find Read and click Remove.
  3. In the Read app inside Zoom, also turn off Auto-open in meetings if it’s on.

Disconnect your calendar, or delete Read entirely

  • Disconnect the calendar: in Read’s Integrations page, under Calendar & Meetings, click the active integration and choose Disconnect.
  • Delete the account: Account Settings › Advanced › Delete my account, then confirm.
  • Microsoft 365: to revoke the permissions you gave Read, open Microsoft’s My Apps portal, choose Manage your application for Read, then Revoke Permissions. If your admin granted the permissions, only the admin can remove them.

Still joining? According to Read, the usual causes are another invitee who uses Read, or a second Read account of your own.

Remove Otter

Stop Otter from joining your meetings

  1. On the Otter home page, open the Meetings tab and choose AI Notetaker settings.
  2. Set auto-join to Meetings I manually select. The same setting is under Integrations › Meetings › Default auto-join settings.

Meetings you changed by hand before keep their own setting, so check upcoming events too.

Remove Otter from a meeting (Zoom, Teams or Meet)

  • Anyone in the meeting can type stop otter in the chat. It removes every Otter notetaker from that meeting.
  • The Otter user can open the conversation and choose Stop Notetaker › Yes, turn it off.

Disconnect the calendar or delete the account

  • Calendar: Integrations, then Disconnect next to the calendar.
  • Account: Account Settings › General › Delete account. Otter only allows this if you’re the only user in the workspace.
  • For a whole company: on Otter Enterprise, admins can switch the notetaker off per member under Workspace › Manage Workspace › Members.

Remove Fireflies

Stop Fireflies from joining

  • Settings › Recording & Privacy › Recording, then switch off Auto-record meetings.
  • Or, under Upcoming › Calendar meeting settings, choose Only when I invite fred@fireflies.ai.
  • For one meeting, remove fred@fireflies.ai from the calendar invite.

Remove Fireflies from Zoom, Meet or Teams

  • Zoom: participant list › More › Remove.
  • Google Meet: the three-dot menu next to the notetaker › Remove from the call.
  • Teams: the “…” menu next to the notetaker › Remove from meeting.
  • Or type /ff leave in the chat.

To delete your account: Settings › Account › Delete my account. Fireflies says your data is permanently deleted after 30 days.

Block note-taking bots in meetings you host

Zoom

  • Turn on the Waiting Room (Settings › Meeting › Security), so nothing joins without being admitted.
  • Turn on Only authenticated users can join from web client.
  • Require a CAPTCHA for guest users who aren’t signed in. Zoom started enabling this for all accounts in a phased rollout from 22 July 2026.

Microsoft Teams

  • Admins: in the Teams admin center, Meetings › Meeting policies › Meeting join & lobby, the setting Manage external bots and their access to meetings. By default, detected bots wait in the lobby for approval.
  • On 23 September 2026 Microsoft announced that admins can also block identified external bots automatically through meeting policies.
  • Organizers: in Meeting options, limit who can bypass the lobby.

Google Meet

Open Host controls › Meeting access type and choose Trusted or Restricted. Google says anonymous users and third-party bots that ask to join are then denied automatically. These options are for Google Workspace accounts; Restricted isn’t available on personal accounts.

Or take notes without a bot in the call

Bots join because that’s how most note takers get the audio. Some tools capture it from your own computer instead, so nothing appears in the participant list. QuietNote is one of them — it’s in private beta, and you decide when capture starts. Whatever you use, let people know you’re taking notes where the rules require it.

Questions

Can someone other than the host remove a note-taking bot?

Often, yes. Any participant can type “read stop” or “opt out” in the chat to make Read AI leave, “stop otter” to remove Otter, or “/ff leave” to remove Fireflies. Removing a participant from the call itself is usually limited to the host or co-hosts.

Why does Read AI keep joining after I deleted my account?

Read’s help center gives two common reasons: another person invited to the meeting uses Read, or you have a second Read account (for example one signed in with a different email). Check Read’s Account & Privacy Center, and ask the other invitee to turn off auto-join.

Does typing “stop otter” turn Otter off for good?

No. It removes every Otter notetaker from that meeting only. To stop it joining future meetings, change Otter’s auto-join setting to “Meetings I manually select” or disconnect your calendar.

Is there one switch in Zoom that blocks all AI note takers?

We couldn’t find one in Zoom’s documentation. What works is a combination: a waiting room, “Only authenticated users can join from web client”, and the CAPTCHA for guests who aren’t signed in.

Can I keep notes without any bot in the call?

Yes. Some note takers capture audio from your own computer instead of joining as a participant. Whatever you use, let attendees know you’re taking notes where the rules require it.
